| Abstract | This study aimed to investigate the effects of an 8-week inspiratory muscle training (IMT) program on inspiratory function, walking ability, and endurance in patients with stroke. Methods: A total of 30 patients with stroke were randomly assigned to the IMT group (n=15) and the neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) group (n=15). The IMT group performed IMT using the POWERbreathe K5 device at 40%–60% of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) for 30 min per session, 5 days per week for 8 weeks, in addition to conventional neurodevelopmental treatment. The NDT group received only conventional NDT. Inspiratory function parameters, the 10-meter walk test (10MWT), and the 6-min walk test (6MWT) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and analysis of covariance with preintervention values as covariates, and the significance level was set at α=.05. Results: After the intervention, the IMT group showed significant improvements in MIP, maximal inspiratory flow rate, and maximal inspiratory volume (p<.05), whereas no significant changes were observed in the NDT group. In addition, the IMT group demonstrated significant enhancements in walking ability and endurance, as evidenced by reduced 10MWT times and increased 6MWT distances (p<.05). Between-group comparisons revealed that the IMT group exhibited significantly greater improvements than the NDT group in all inspiratory function and walking-related parameters. Conclusion: IMT effectively improved inspiratory function, walking ability, and endurance in patients with stroke. These findings indicate that IMT is a safe and feasible intervention with clinical value, offering integrated improvements in inspiratory and motor functions beyond those achieved by conventional neurorehabilitation programs. | ||
