| Abstract | This study aimed to compare and analyze the post-exercise heart rate recovery responses according to stress and fatigue levels in college students. Methods: College students from a university in South Chungcheong Province were assessed using a questionnaire that measures their stress and fatigue levels. They were subjected to perform the Harvard Step Test at a rate of perceived exertion of 11–13. Heart rate and oxygen saturation were measured before, immediately after, and 1, 3, and 5 minutes after exercise. The recovery rates were measured at each time point. Results: The high-stress group showed a significantly lower heart rate recovery (HRR) at 1 minute after exercise than the low-stress group (p value of <.05). The high-fatigue group showed a higher heart rate immediately after exercise and a significantly lower HRR at 5 minutes after exercise than the low-fatigue group (p value of <.05). The correlation analysis results showed that stress levels were positively correlated with HRR at 1 minute post-exercise and negatively correlated with HRR at 1 minute (r=−.667). Fatigue was also significantly negatively correlated with HRR at 5 minutes post-exercise (r= −.424). Conclusion:Stress and fatigue were found to negatively affect HRR after exercise. They should also be considered during exercise and rehabilitation. This suggests that HRR can be a useful assessment tool for physiological response indicators when developing exercise and recovery management plans. | ||
